Above on the left is the Classic Easter Bunny Costume which will cover you from head to toe with white fur. The inner ears and chest are marked out in pink. In the center is the Deluxe Easter Bunny. The colorful vest and bowtie make it very distinctive. On the right is Eggert the Easter Bunny.
Legend has it that the Easter Bunny brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and toys to children in their homes on the night before Easter. He may hide the basket somewhere in the house or he may put it in a designated place. It’s the children’s job to find it when they get up in the morning.
The Easter Bunny is similar to Santa Claus in that both bring gifts on the night before their respective holiday. The tradition comes from Southwest Germany where it was first written about in the 1700s. The children would build nests in their houses, often from caps or bonnets. If they had been good children the Easter Bunny would come and place eggs in their nests. The nest was later replaced by a basket.
Eggs and rabbits have long been symbols of fertility. Rabbits produce large litters in the spring which connects them with the idea of spring being a time when the earth is becoming more fertile.
Whatever the origins, the Easter Bunny is a great tradition and I hope one of the costumes takes your fancy. If you want to see other costumes, check out our main bunny outfit page.

I like to use the paper crates that you buy your eggs in, cut out the individual crate bottoms and then fill those with Easter treats. Try adding a little bit of paper grass into the crate bottoms and place a marshmallow Peep (those cute little edible yellow chicks) inside. Adding some jelly beans or Hershey’s Kisses rounds out the look. Make a few dozen of these and set them out on a table as party favors for all of your egg hunting bunnies!
